7 Costumes You Shouldn't Wear This Halloween

By Maryellen Stohlman-Vanderveen - Oct 30 2015

From dead brides to sexy cats and witches, there is an abundance of classic Halloween costumes for a college student to choose from every year. However, costumes referencing popular culture often dominate young adults’ costume choices. This year, among the classic offensive costumes, two new costumes that stuck out to me as particularly tasteless (featured at the end of the list.) We’ll begin with the classic costumes for those of you who may be interested in the hackneyed as well as the new:

7. Jackie and John F. Kennedy

The concept of “too soon” never really stops applying when it comes to a national tragedy. From JFK to MLK, you really just should not go for the zombie aesthetic. (The same idea applies to other nations’ tragedies as well — looking at those of you considering dressing up as a failing airplane’s crew.)

6. Illegal Alien

Whether you take the word Alien as a literal extraterrestrial (in which case your pun is already so dried up, you might as well gone as the ‘life of the party’ and written the word ‘life’ on your shirt) or even worse, dress up as another nationality or race, this costume will already be insensitive. Along the same lines is the ‘sexy Native American,’ it just will not ever be tasteful.

5. The Escaped Mental Patient

I don't think that most informed people appreciate the way it perpetuates stereotypes about the mentally ill. In a similar way to which appropriating the Native American culture negatively affects its people, taking on the guise of a person struggling with mental illness not only perpetuates stereotypes but dehumanizes them.

4. The Plug and Socket Sexual Innuendo Couples Costume

Put any costume with something phallic and placed in the proper region in this costumes’ place. I do not want to be reminded that a couple will be plugging stuff in later while I try to enjoy my Halloween night.

3. Necrophiliac

I think the shirt says it all for the case of why you should never wear this costume.

2. Caitlyn Jenner

There is always going to be that guy who dresses in drag at a Halloween Party. The concept of being a woman is *hilarious* (sarcasm alert), but no one said it better than Addison Rose, who began a Change.org campaign to convince Spirit Halloween to cease selling their Caitlyn Jenner, “To make a costume out of a marginalized identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse… cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.” She points out, “At a time when trans women and GNC folx, especially black trans women, are being murdered at such a high rate, and homelessness, unemployment, and inaccessibility to healthcare run rampant in our community, making fun of one or all of us is utterly insensitive and deplorable.”

1. “Foxy Megyn Bloody Tampon Costume”

My jaw honestly dropped when I saw this one. I had seen the ‘sexy tampon costume before” and heard Trumps she must have had “blood coming out of her wherever” comment but never did I expect the two to be combined into one literally horrifying costume. It not only reinforces the ancient but incredibly ignorant claim that all women are dysfunctional and incapable during their ‘time of the month’ (because god-forbid anyone said the word period in a very public setting) but also belittles Megyn Kelly, her work, and that of other females.

That is the end of my rant. If you see a costume that upsets you as much as these costumes upset me, tweet it to me - @maryellenvdv
