Student loan management site IonTuition.com has some bad news for those with student loans. Prospective partners don’t have a rosy view of debt, Inside Higher Ed reported Tuesday. The site's recent survey of 1000 adults found that 75 percent consider student debt “baggage.”
About half said student loan debt was an “important factor” when starting a relationship. 12 percent saw student debt as heavier “baggage” than a divorce, a child from another relationship or even a nonviolent felony. Over 25 percent said it was irresponsible to take out loans and enter a low-paying industry.
But there could be a bright side. If your partner doesn't mind your debt, you may sign away a little less of your paycheck to Sallie Mae every month. About 70 percent said they saw it as their responsibility to help a significant other pay off student loans. Maybe that’s why over a third said they would date a “wealthy benefactor” if they would pay off their debt.
