Are you going the random roommate route for freshman year? Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky will be, Fox 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul reported Monday. After the Olympics wrap up, she’ll be going to Stanford, where all freshmen are assigned random roommates - and don’t find out who they are until move-in day.
“We have found that roommate relationships are more positive and successful when they start out with face-to-face interaction, rather than preconceived notions based on fragments of information or online communications,” a Stanford blog post said.
Roommates at Stanford are assigned by two undergraduate housing coordinators. They try to ensure that the university’s diversity is reflected in roommate assignments. In other words, Ledecky likely won’t be rooming with a fellow student-athlete.
“It’s pretty unique,” Ledecky said in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News. “I did find out yesterday, though, which dorm I’m in.”
