According to the Claremont Independent, outrage erupted among Scripps College students when an email was sent out announcing that their commencement speaker would be Madeleine Albright, America's first female secretary of state.
A Scripps student released an article entitled, "Madeleine Albright Has Blood On Her Hands," incriminating Albright and accusing her of being a "white feminist and repeated genocide enabler," because she removed UN peacekeepers and U.S. troops from Rwanda and supported military intervention in the Balkans. Albright also made a controversial comment that there is a special place in hell for women who don't help each other, in a call for women to vote for Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
However, more of the concerns come from students who want diversity among their commencement speakers. More students disagreed with the choice of Albright as a speaker simply because she is a "white feminist." According to Fox News, a Scripps student tweeted "... does anyone know how many [people of color] we’ve had as guest commencement speakers at Scripps?” Apparently, some professors will also avoid the commencement if Albright is the speaker.
